So as we all head into the new year we are all faced with the concept of New Years resolutions. Oh I have made
them before only to fall short of my goal as life (family and work) take over my good intentions. So this year I decided to get my friend Angela involved in my New Year resolution so that I have to be accountable to someone other than myself. Oh, I guess this would be a good place to tell you what my New Years Resolutionis.........well the plan is to be
physically active for a minimum of 30 minutes for all 365 days of the year. That is right every single day of 2012. So now you might be asking why are you blogging about it? Well Angela and I were trying to figure out how to keep each other on track, she lives in London and I live in Collingwood. We tried google calendar but that was really frustrating and then Angela sent me an excel sheet that had dates on it and that is not that much fun. So when I was snowshoeing the other day I thought to myself maybe I should blog about our efforts - make us accountable not only to each other but anyone else who might be interested in what we are up to. So that is the beginning of this blog I hope you enjoy and I look forward to your comments.

Days 177 to 181 - Post Bike Race Week

Well this week was a hard one - really tired after the bike race last weekend and really busy trying to get everything done before going on holidays next week.

Monday - Day 177 - slept in as I was trying to make up for lack of sleep over the weekend.  First weekend sleeping in the VW and I need to get use to it again - it's not as comfortable as my king sized bed at home.  I also had to share with Matthew - he is only 11 but it is like sleeping with another adult and he talks in his sleep :) Today I took it easy - my  knees were a little sore from biking all weekend so I just fit in a good 40 minute brisk walk

Tuesday - Day 178 - this is break week at Active Life but I jumped into one of the drop in classes - a great workout lots of legs and cardio.

Wednesday - Day 179 - taxes, taxes, taxes is all I have to say!!! Working hard to get them done and was in the mode until I looked up and it was 11 pm - that is right 11pm and I had not gotten in my physical activity for the day - all I wanted to do was go to bed but that would not be right - I am almost half way there!!!!  So I grabbed my iphone and off I went for a 40 minute brisk walk - interestingly enough the minute I started the walk I felt great!!!

Thursday - Day 180 - another day of work, taxes and kids activities.  Wanted to get up early to work out but ended up staying up late after my walk last night to get more work done!!  So at 9, once the kids were settled I convinced Sean to tour the town with me - we also needed to talk about our holidays without little listening ears around every corner!

Friday - Day 181 - again another busy day but I managed to get out for a 5 k run - felt really good even though it was so hot out.

24 Hours of Summer Solstice

Well this weekend has finally arrived - it is the big bike race - the 24 Hour Summer Solstice - this is a 24 hour bike race that we, Sean and I, have participated in for many years.  It is a relay mountain biking race.  It is a great weekenkend filled with mountain biking, camping, kids running and riding around, friend and lots of fun!

Day 174 - Friday - we decide to head down early to the race to get set up and to get a ride in before the race starts on Saturday at noon.  Matthew and I did the loop together it was lots of fun with lots of good up hills.  I was really impressed with Matthew and how well he rode - won't be long before he is better then me. Next year he will be able to participate in the relay - you have to be 12.

Day 175 - Saturday - on your mark get set go!!!!!!  The race started at noon today and I was the 5th rider - we scheduled it so that I could see the kids in their races.  Kade and his buddy Jayden rocked it in their division - coming 2 and 1 respectively.  Matthew was in a big division with a lot older riders but he still managed to come in the top 10 in a close race - again really impressed with his riding.  Actually the Collingwood kids did great in all age groups and really dominated the races.  I think part of it is that our trails in Collingwood are a lot more technical then the race today so they were able to really hammer during the race - it was really exciting to watch these kids and their accomplishments.

Day 176 - Sunday - second loop of the race was nice and early - 8 am - not as many racers on the course - temperature was good, legs a little tired but they eventually warmed up! Had some technical difficulties this loop, chain came off a couple of times and my seat kept slowly lowering itself but still enjoyed the ride. Have to note one moment in the ride, just when I was running out of steam - there was a long steep rock path downhill followed by a quick and sharp sandy switchback - I just rode it and did pass two guys that had pulled off to the side - well the guy riding it behind me yelled out to me that I "rocked it" and he was impressed! I guess that is because I am a girl - but I really did rock it!!!! What a great weekend!

kids cheering me on at the finish line

Just wanted to note that I am really proud of Sean - he was not able to ride this year due to his pinched nerve - this is his favourite event of the year - I think Sean was born on a bike - well he did come second in the freezie eating contest! So proud - oh Kade came second in his age group too - following in his dads footsteps :)

Day 170 to 174

Again this was another hot week and really busy with lots of kids stuff.

Monday - Day 170 - did not get my workout until late in the day - a great 8 km run at 9 pm with Heather and Lorraine and then a swim to cool off.

Tuesday  - Day 171 - early morning workout at Active Life - it was testing today and my goal was to beat the time posted on the wall - done! Then we completed my favourite workout the 21 to 9 (3).  I love that one.

Wednesday - Day 172 - well it was an early morning metcon workout.  This time we followed the right route and I had a much easier time with the up hill  :)

Thursday - Day 173 - another Active Life morning - it was the spin and strength workout - something a little new but a great cardio workout.

Another week down!

Days 168 & 169 - Fathers Day Weekend

The weekend already and  I can't believe we are just a few days away from summer.  My New Years Resolution has been upheld for almost 2 seasons.  Only 13 days and I will have made it half way through the year.

Day 168 - Saturday - the busy week has caught up to me and I managed to sleep in, something that I never do, and just hung out with the kids all morning. We watched a movie and lounged around all morning.  Then the kids had tennis lessons and I did some puttering around the house.  It was a hot day and we decided to head to the water for some paddleboarding, kayaking and some dinner.  I had Sean drop me off part of the way to the shale and I ran to meet them - 5 km.

Day 169 - Sunday - Happy Fathers Day to all the great dads out there! Boys made Sean breakfast and Sean decided that he wanted to hike up Blue Mountain  for fathers day -so we did and the kids did some of the metcon obstacle too.  Lots of fun!

The 5 Km Challenge - Days 163 to 167

This week I decided I would challenge myself - a challenge of running a minimum of 5 kilometres everyday during the week!

Day 163 - Monday - I slept in and had a horrible day at work - one of those days were you are really busy but don't seem to get anything accomplished!  That included my workout - I also needed some motivation so I called a friend on the off chance that she would be available at 9pm in the evening to go for a run - she was - we got in a great 5 km - my goal - then I ran home with her and continued to complete a 10 km run - they say when you feel good you should just keep going - that is what I did and it was great!

Day 164 - Tuesday - the day started out with a great workout at Actvie Life. Then in the evening - after soccer and rugby and getting the kids to bed I managed to get out for a 5 km run - so still able to stay on track for completing the challenge.

Day 165 - Wednesday - This morning was a metcon run - a run along the metcon adventure race course - up and across Blue Mountain Resort - it was a little easier this morning - the legs and lungs did not give out as early.  Got in my 5km run!

Day 166 - Thursday - Good Morning Active Life workout - so tired this week! but still managed to make it to the early morning workout.  It was a good one too!  Then after the kids left for school I headed out the door for my 5 km run - managed to push it to 7.5km!

Day 167 - Friday - today is a short day as we, the Rennie clan, headed to TO right at 4pm to get to a world cup rugby game - Canada vs. Italy.  My husband Sean is the head coach of the Georgian Bay Titan mini rugby program and he set up a trip for the kids to go to the game and be apart of the pre-game and half time program.  Some of the kids walked onto the field and sang the national anthems with the players and some kids, including Kade and Matthew, played an exhibition game at half time.  What an experience for the kids and I can honestly say that I really enjoyed it too!

Kids waiting to go on field with rugby players

So the day was busy getting organized for the evening event so it had to be an early workout this morning.  So it started with a core and strength workout at Active Life and then a difficult and what seemed like forever 5km run.  Mission Accomplished!!!

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot - Days 161 & 162

This weekend was the hottest and busiest yet.  It started with a rugby tournament and ended with an evening at the beach and a great mountain bike ride.

Saturday - Day 161 - this day started with a morning rugby tournament in Markham.  Both boys were in it and had a great time.  This was Matthew's first time playing a tackle rugby game - actually the whole under 12 team - the program has just started with the Georgian Bay Titans Club.  I think they were a little shocked in the first game and the team they played definitely knew what they were doing.  But it was amazing to see how much they had improved and how much confidence they gained by the third game.  Since we were so close to TO - Sarah, Maeve and I had to get a little shopping in - so I did not get home until late but still managed to get in a 35 minute brisk walk - although I was also pretty active with all the walking at the rugby tournament and while shopping :)

Sunday - Day 162 - this was a fun day.  Well it started with work for the morning - Sean has report cards and I had to get my invoices out.  But we headed to the Shale in Craigleith around 4 pm for some paddle boarding and kayaking.  Then Heather, Sarah, Lorraine and I went for a mountain bike ride - we were probably an hour and a half - and we tried out some new trails - by accident!!!!  The 24 hours of adrenaline race is coming up this month the weekend of June 23rd.  We have some spots left on our team if anyone wants to join us - it is a corporate team - super fun and no pressure - the whole family can come and camp and race - it really is a great time - let me know if you are interested!!

This is our 1976 Volkswagen westfalia all loaded up for fun - a paddle board, kayak and my mountain bike!

Days 156 to 160

Well this week was a fast one - Monday came fast and Friday was a day off for the kids.  The work week was a busy one too - so no mid day workouts for me this week.

Day 156 - Monday - late night Sunday night getting some work done, which I did not completely finish so I was not able to work out in the morning which threw my whole day off. It was a day filled with lots of driving and the evening that was filled with kids activities - so I was not able to get any exercise in until late, late in the day - a 40 minute brisk walk around the neighbourhood.

Day 157 - Tuesday - I was able to get up early this morning and get to the Active Life workout with the ladies - a fun filled morning working out our legs and upper body with ropes and the TRX.  I also managed a 30 minute walk with the kids.

Day 158 - Wednesday - so Sarah decided that we would run the metcon course at Blue Mountain this morning.  So we ran the 5 km loop but did not do the obstacles as they were taken down.  The start is straight up the south end of Blue Mountain Resort - up the escarpment - that was a calf burner, the rest of the course weaved up and down slightly and was single track trail running - really nice.  A great run, view and workout!!

Day 159 - ThursdayActive Life this morning - the 200 workout - 10 strength exercises 20 reps - as many times through all of them in 30 minutes - I love this work out - although we usually do the 150 work out - 10 exercises 15 reps - so we are pushing it harder today. I also love this workout because I am a little competitive and this one is a little bit of a competition amongst my workout buddies.

Also tonight was the kid versus the parents soccer game with Matthew's soccer team.  There were about 8 parents against the 15 kids - only 2 moms.  It was fun and I got a good workout running back and forth between the offence and defence.  I have to brag a little here - I got the first goal of the game - that is right the first goal - not sure how Matthew felt about that but I loved it!!!!!!  Soccer is not my game either but I managed to play with the dads!

Day 160 - Friday - well work and play interrupted my workout again today - kids had a PD day today so they were shipped off to a friends house for the morning while I got some work done and then I had those same kids and my kids for the afternoon.  It turned out to be a great afternoon - another friend of mine invited us to visit her at a house with a pool and tennis courts.  Needless to say it was a really great afternoon of them swimming and playing tennis while we lounged by the pool - I could get use to that lifestyle :)  I did fit in a quick 40 minute run between the pool party and our friend Mark's birthday party!

This week was ride your bike to work week - I just wanted to congratulate my husband Sean for riding his bike to work for the entire school year so far - that is right starting on the first day of school in September Sean rode his bike "rusty" to school - through sun, rain and snow - every single day - did not even miss a day until this week :(  He has injured himself somehow - a pinched nerve in his neck or a herniated disk- needless to say he has been in a lot of pain this week.  Started to really bug him over last weekend and he did manage to get to work on his bike on Monday but had to be driven home by his principle halfway through day because of the pain - so much pain he was off for a couple of days and when he went back to work later in the week he was still in too much pain to ride - so he had to drive.  I just want to say that we, Matthew, Kade and I are really proud of you for making such an effort to ride your bike to work everyday - you are an inspiration and a great role model for our kids.  We can't wait for you to get better so we can get back out there on the bikes with you.

Days 154 & 155 Rain, Rain Go Away

Well the weekend is here again and it is raining - a lot.  We do need the rain for the grass and gardens - but really - on the weekend?  Even though it rained we still managed to get out there and get active this weekend.

Saturday - Day 154 - managed to get in a run with Heather when the rain was not coming down.  A good 9 km run felt good to be warm :)

Sunday - Day 155 - another wet one but Matthew, Kade, myself and some friends went for a hike up Blue Mountain - it was muddy but it was fun.  We hiked to the top and then took the gondola down.  Then we spent the afternoon at the Plunge, a waterpark at the Village.  Great way to get the kids active!

Days 149 to 153

Well this week I hit the 150 day mark - that is right 150 days in a row of physical activity.  For some reason 150 days feels significant - sort of like a milestone.  I guess now I am aiming for 200 days.

Monday - Day 149 - This workout was the "clear out the cobwebs from Lobsterfest" workout.  Sarah and I managed to get in a 45 minute run - it might not have been pretty but we did get it done :)

Tuesday - Day 150 - the milestone day.  This day started with a great cardio strength workout at Active Life and ended with a 30 minute walk with Matthew - a great 150 day!!!!

Wednesday - Day 151 - a busy day so I had to get the workout in early - joined a 45 minute spin class at the Y.

Thursday - Day 152 - Another morning at Active Life - this morning was a great leg workout.  Managed to fit in a quick 30 minute run too.

Friday - Day 153 - jumped into an extra workout at Active Life this morning - a great way to end the week.
